Lead Acid Battery Charger Buyers Guide
Purchasing the right charger is the key to proper maintenance for a longer battery life. This guide will aid you in locating a charger for your lead acid battery. If you need further assistance please contact our friendly customer service department.
First, identify what type of lead acid battery you have, LiFePO4, wet cell (flooded), gel cell, or AGM/VRLA maintenance free. Generally one battery charger will work for all of these; the exception is LiFePO4 and gel cell.Next, find the voltage and capacity on your battery. The most common voltage of lead acid batteries is 6 or 12 volts. The capacity is expressed in Ah or amp hours.
Finally, determine your usage and how fast you need the battery back in service. Depending on the state of discharge, you can approximate how long your lead acid battery will need to charge.
Approximate Recharge Time Calculations
(Battery Capacity) / (Charger Current) = Hours
(Amp Hours) / (Amps) = Hours
Example: Charging a 12v / 30Ah battery with a 12v / 10Ah charger.
(30 Amp-Hours) / (10 Amps) = 3 hours.
So it will take approximately 3 hours to charge a 30Ah battery with a 10Ah battery. Please remember this is a general calculation and charge times will vary depending on the state of discharge on the battery.
As a general rule of thumb when selecting a charger for a lead acid battery, match the voltage and use one that is no more than 20% of the capacity rating of the battery (at a 20hr. rate).
Example; to charge a 12 volt / 7.5Ah battery, select a charger with a maximum charge output of 1.5 Amps (7.5 x 0.20 = 1.5).
