50 Lithium-Ion Battery Powered Buses

Nothing says "Green" Olympics better than 50 battery powered buses. These buses powered by lithium-ion batteries will be running a total distance of 6.5 miles for the athletes and officials in the Olympic Village, the northern arena area, and the Press Village on three loop lines. The specially made buses are the largest number of their kind in the games, says Sun Fengchun, an electric car expert with the Beijing Institute of Technology.

The institute started designing these electric buses in 2000 and is now ready and set to go in time for the Beijing Olympics. Each bus employs an advanced lithium-ion electric battery which provides higher energy density and longer cycle lifetime while using less space than older battery systems using nickel-metal hydride and lead acid. Fully charged, each bus can carry up to 80 passengers and run over 80 miles at a top speed of 50 mph, all the while producing zero emissions.

With mounting global concerns on climate change and pollution, both China and the Olympic Committee are committed to the UN goal of combating global climate change through the use of low and zero emission public transportation. And now, with this fleet of 50 zero emission buses, they can take the first steps to making that goal into reality.
